when we reached hungary at the end of june it was pretty easy to feel the progress we had made on our way back to switzerland. coming from eastern europe we noticed all the familiar things of being back in central europe. compared with romania and bulgaria everything seemed more organised and there were cycling pathes. of course there were some remaining communist buildings but the historic town centers were fantastic. and there were some of the most wonderful bakeries we had ever seen. bakeries – something we had really missed.but there were two major things which were in great contrast to switzerland. on one hand there was the hungarian language which isn’t related to any other language in the world. it was bsolutely impossible to understand anything. there was some turkish influence and the sound of the language reminded us of skandinavian language but other than that the language was all new to us and exciting. on the other hand there was the currency (forint) which isn’t worth much. 1 swiss franc = 200 forint. it was a bit like being in iran and carrying aorund some huge amounts of money. thanks to our strong currency and the weak hungarian currency especially food seemed really cheap and food in hungary was absolutely magic. reason enough to go back there.from szeged we headed west toward lake palaton. the weather was nice, the towns really nice nice and the ice cream fantastic. no worries...? unfortunately this year there are millions of mosquitos and in the evenings pitching the tent it was hell. but even so we had to admit that lake palaton is really nice.our next destination was komarom, next to the danube and to the slovakian border. on our way we had – luckily – a stoppover in veszprem. the historic town was just magic and we believe it’s probably the nicest old town we saw on all our trip. in komarom we could stay with the family of henrietta whom we had met in australia. she organized from donwunder so we could stay with her wonderful family. once again we were spoiled and before we left we were fed with a great pea soup. when it comes to soups the hungarians are hard to beat. thanks henrietta for making it happen so we could get to know your family and the pea soup!
